Trotters

One weekend in 2025, I was reading the travel supplement in one of Britain's national newspapers when I was gripped by a wave of nausea. I am no great traveller (I am not well travelled, and I do it badly) but I have always enjoyed writing that seeks to capture some sense of both place and person. The place being visited and the person doing the visiting. Yet modern travel journalism is denuded of all character and exists, really, for the function of selling things. Hotels, tours, restaurants, museums. Every trip that gets written up in our newspapers seems to be targeted at multimillionaire baby boomers.

The idea is for Trotters to put the focus on the writing. Insightful, colourful, amusing writers tackling some of the world's best (and worst) cities. No pretending to be a local; this is only for tourists. No big SEO hook, just first-person storytelling. And, crucially, this is not about recommendations. You might inadvertently find inspiration for your next trip here on Trotters, but you're not going to get a list of hotels where rooms cost £500 a night.
